John is one of those people you just want to hang out with. He is funny and has a great sense of humor. Most people when they first meet him are not sure if he is joking or serious, but they soon find out he is almost always joking around. He is the type of person that will do anything to help you out.

John has had a camera in his hand since he was young. He starting out shooting on his dad’s work Polaroid camera and would use up all the film. When in college he started getting into doing video and rented a camera to get footage of his ski trip to Steamboat, Colorado. While he still had the camera he and his younger brother Steve created a short video production of shooting a hockey puck into the oven. They set up the shots and created the in camera transitions to make it appear they actually did make the shot into the oven. He wishes he still had that footage.

One very important thing John’s grandmother Marie always told him, “Never stop learning”. He takes that to heart and pushes himself to continually improve his skills and encourages his kids to do the same. John went to college at Indiana State University and majored in Aviation Administration. Though when he graduated the job market was not good and ended up following in his father’s footsteps and became an Insurance Claims Adjuster. He then became very interested in Insurance Fraud Investigation. Since the company he worked for at the time did not offer this type of training he used his own vacation time and money to get certified. But something was still missing and he continued to pursue photography for fun. In 2004 he decided to go back to school and get his MBA from Anderson University. It was during this time in 2005 his parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and he decided he wanted to put together a photo montage of their 50 years together. This was the seed that started Northernlight Filmworks. The company started out as a hobby for John and Jen to do on the side but it quickly grew. John is one of the lead shooters and editors and is a huge advocate for everyone on the team to continually push themselves beyond their comfort zone and improve their skills.

John is also a photographer with a style leaning toward Lifestyle, Fashion and Landscape Photography. He has produced a number of commercial projects ranging from music videos, short documentaries, instructional video and commercial promotional video under their sister company Story House Media, which launched in 2012.

When not working,  John loves to spend time with his family, hang out with friends or just go exploring by himself. He gets true joy out of driving where ever the wind blows him and take photos. He loves hanging out at Lake Monroe on his boat with Jen. He is loves the outdoors and has had many adventures.  He enjoys craft beer, red wine and a good gin & tonic.  If Jen let him he would eat pizza, spaghetti or grilled cheese with syrup every day.

Notre Dame Wedding

FullSizeRender-5

{Marie + Andrew}

We had the pleasure of producing a same day edit for Marie and Andrew. We spoke with Andrew a few times on the phone and he wanted the same day edit to be a surprise for Marie. Thankfully, it was. Andrew graduated from Notre Dame while Marie graduated from neighboring St. Mary’s. There is quite a sentimental side to Andrew pulling from his family but also he was very sentimental about his wedding day. Marie was so beautiful and she could not wait to get to the Basilica to Marry Andrew. We love everything about a Notre Dame wedding. The campus and of course the Basilica provide an incredible backdrop. The wedding was at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the reception was at the Morris Inn, also on campus. The Basilica is certainly a church to see. The Basilica dates back to 1888 and was constructed in the Gothic Revival architecture.

We have produced many same day edits and it always comes down to Planning, Efficiency and Execution but it also weighs heavy on having a great team. It was a pleasure to finally work with Amanda with Amanda Fales Photography. Thanks Amanda for letting us take a few moments of the photo session to get some shots locked in.

Marie and Andrew: It was an honor to be able to film your wedding day. Although this is just a small sliver of time in your life together, it is none the less a very important part of your life. You both looked amazing and happy. Everyone we came into contact with, whether family or friends, we felt welcomed. Congratualations to you both.

To experience the Same Day Edit, see the video below. We recommend that you play it in HD.

Northernlight Filmworks Team–Meet Jennifer Moon

Northernlight Filmworks has grown and expanded so we thought it would be a good idea since we have updated our About Us page with new head shots and bios to do a blog series introducing our team.

Jen Moon

Jen Moon

Jennifer Moon (AKA Jen) started Northernlight Filmworks in 2006 with her husband John. She runs the day to day operations, schedules and meets with clients, organizes the shoots and schedules the teams. She is also one of the lead shooters and editors. She gets asked often if she went to school for production and she very confidently says, “No, I taught myself how to shoot and edit”.

Since she was little she has always been interested in learning how and why things work and even once when about 10 yrs old took apart her dad’s Pachinko game because the balls were getting stuck. With the drive to always expand her mind, she decided she wanted to become a teacher and received her degree from Indiana University at Indianapolis in Elementary Education. Though she loved teaching, Northernlight Filmworks was born and grew quickly. She took a leap of faith and dove head first into this amazing adventure of being an entrepreneur and working along side John.

In addition to running Northernlight Filmworks, she helps John manage Story House Media, and is the co-founder of The POSH Retreat which is an annual conference for female filmmakers and photographers.

She has been married to John, who you will meet in the next post, for 12 years. They have 5 amazing children (no she did not give birth to all 5, they are a blended family).
