We enjoyed shooting some engagement photos for Emily and Jason in and around the downtown Indianapolis area. We always enjoy meeting our couples and engagement sessions are a great way to get to know them. Jason and Emily’s wedding will be later this year and we will be doing both photo and cinema. Jason and Emily love the east coast vibe in fact Nantucket, Massachusetts holds a very special place in each of their hearts.
We received a message yesterday from Fashion Designer Berny Martin of Catou who let us know that our images were being used in a feature in Chicago Planner Magazine. Due to space limitations, they were unable to include all of the people that helped pull this shoot off. We encourage you to visit our original Blog post of Laurel Hall – Taylor +Keegan. This magazine is targeted for Chicago Wedding Planning couples but it has applicable information no matter your geographical location.
We recently attended RESET Conference, which was a photo / cinema workshop and one of the speakers was Photographer Jeff Rojas who is based out of New York. One of the things that he mentioned was that he recommends that Grooms wear a tailored suit for the wedding. This is a little more of a cost but the Groom will be much more comfortable and it will look better in photos. Another benefit is that it is a suit that he can wear after the wedding.
The online magazine of Chicago Planner Magazine provides a PDF of The Ultimate Groom Guide. Topics include; What you need to wear, How to be more involved, How to make an Old Fashion adult beverage, Ideas for Bachelor Party, Planning the Honeymoon and more.
We really like the idea of a tailored or custom made suit for the Groom. Whether you are planning a wedding in Chicago or Indianapolis, there are resources locally that you can explore for a well tailored suit. The wedding day is a long day and you might as well look good and be comfortable at the same time.
We had a great time with Jenna and Kyle for their engagement photos, which were taken at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and downtown at Lockerbie and a few at The Alexander Hotel. We will be filming and photographing their wedding in July. We will also be filming and producing a Same Day Edit for Jenna and Kyle to be show at their reception. Engagement sessions are fun because it is a great warm up to how we shoot and interact with our couples, plus we get to see their personalties surface. We are looking forward to their wedding in July.
We had so much fun capturing family photos for the Light Family. Savannah and Dakota are such sweeties and we loved chatting it up with them. We also loved having them hold the ultrasound photo to announce a new baby on his way and due to arrive in May. If you click on each photo it will enlarge the photo.
This is more of a personal post for us. A week and a half ago we had one of our family dinners. When you have 5 children all out of the house trying schedule family time with everyone can be difficult. We try to get together monthly but with busy wedding season it doesn’t happen every month like we would like. Ok, back to this particular family dinner. After dinner we were going to have a fire in our fire pit and John, Bria and Damien went outside to get it started while I was attending to our beautiful granddaughter Brynleigh. Bria came in to check in on her and it was at that moment Damien asked John if he could have Bria’s hand in marriage. John of course gave his blessing and then Bria came back out so Damien told John they would touch base that week.
Damien had the idea of proposing while we were shooting family photos of them at the park the following Sunday so we put the plan in place. John sent a text to both Bria and Damien to see if they wanted to do a quick photo session since the leaves are turning. We set it up to meet at Forest Park in Noblesville, Indiana. All Bria knew was we were taking family photos of them with the fall leaves. Brynleigh was not into doing the photos. Why of course our granddaughter didn’t want to smile when we have a camera in our hands. Shaylee was in on the proposal and came along to “help” with Bryn. I honestly don’t know how she kept the secret in without exploding as she is the one who always blurts it out and creates a chart to figure out who everyone has for Secret Santa. After a few photos with Bryn, John took some photos of just Damien and Bria and the code was John would say, “That’s good”. Then Damien got down on one knee and popped the question. I don’t think they realized I was actually shooting video or maybe they did but I wanted to make sure we had this moment on film for them. As you can tell by the video it was a little shaky during the proposal, one because I was so excited but also because I was crying, Happy Tears of course.
So now we will be on the other side of wedding planning and now the parents of the bride. John and I are so happy for this next chapter in our life and blessed Bria has Damien in her life. Our family is growing! Let the wedding planning begin!

Laurel Hall was the beautiful backdrop to this styled shoot with Taylor and Keegan. Laurel Hall is a historic landmark in Indianapolis, Indiana that hosts several weddings both indoor and outdoor. It is a beautiful mansion.
This shoot was conceptualized as a classic Esquire look, which was fitting for the location. We started the morning with hair styled by Jessica Warrix of JW Salon while Crystal Haffner of Beauty by Crystal worked her magic doing makeup. We loved the personalities of Taylor and Keegan and they really have great chemistry together.
We enjoyed collaborating with Tara Steele of Tara Nichole Weddings. Tara has an amazing eye for detail and the ability to shift gears and think on her feet mentality.
Taylor looked drop dead gorgeous wearing a Justin Alexander dress provided by Posie Patch and shoes by Blue by Betsey Johnson at Macy’s and rounded off with some jewelry from Cheeky Couture. Keegan wore a custom suit from Catou by Designer Berny Martin. Thanks to Stylist Brittany Marie for putting us in contact with Berny Martin. Keegan wore shoes by Calvin Klein.

This is a personal edit for a trip my brother Steve and I took. We went there to do some still photography for a horse rescue called Horse Rescue of South Florida. Our guide Cynthia actually has an incredible love and spirit for saving horses. She was quite a fun guide but we kept her in check. She caught on quickly to our sense of humor and to keep one eye forward and one eye on us. Would love to go back, it was a great experience.
There are so many things to see in this beautiful country and the Everglades National Park is certainly one of those destinations. There was something spiritual about being out there on the water. We made camp on a small island and just sat and talked and drank and talked. I intentionally set my alarm and different times during the night to get a look at the stars. By 2am, the sky was filled with stars and the moon was very bright. Catching the Milky Way out there was amazing. It was 2 in the morning but it was like being a kid again just looking up and realizing how amazing God must be to create all of what we can see. So put it on your list of things to see and remember, I told you so.

This was a trip John took last year. The Boundary Waters has always been a special place for he and his brother Steve. They first went to the BWCA back in 1978 for a 2 week vacation with their Mom and Dad. They stayed at Chik Wauk Lodge, which is now the areas local historical museum.
They have had many return trips to the Gunflint Trail. This is a spiritual place. A place that allows your mind to settle into a reflective routine. It is refreshing.
This particular trip was quite challenging. Day 1 they traveled over 22 miles by canoe on water and there were over 15 different portages. The second day was about 7 miles on water but one long portage nearly a half mile long with some challenging descents. Day 2 we finally reached Grandpa Lake and since this was in May, we were the first team in from the season prior. Which also meant that we had to deal with fall down from the trees that fell over the winter. Grandpa Lake is remote and because of the difficulty getting there, your chances of seeing another human are less likely, especially this time of year.
This is a short little film from our family vacation at Topsail Island in North Carolina. This is one of our favorite spots to relax and unwind. We have been coming to this location for years. We stay at the same house and do just about the same thing every time. Crank up some Jack Johnson or Colbie Caillat, soak up the sun, dig your toes in the sand, read a book and get a little surfing in. We have some rules: (1) No watches, (2) Refrain from referring to time, (3) Get up when you want to get up, (4) Go to bed when you want to go to bed, (5) It’s ok to do nothing at all.
It really is amazing if you just ignore time, your vacation will seem to last so much longer. It’s kind of a way to savor your time off. We love watching the kids just chill out and unwind as well. Vacations like this allow your mind to slow down. It’s a great opportunity to do some reflecting and soul searching. Even a short walk down the beach infuses so much energy into your body and soul. There is something about the beach and all the sights and sounds that go along with the beach life to keep people coming back. We are not a big fan of commercialized areas. We find commercialized areas to be distracting and sometimes defeat the purpose of taking a vacation.
We would love to film a wedding in the Outerbanks area. There are some many romantic areas along the coast of North Carolina.
I took our Canon Super 8 film camera to capture little moments in time that we spent together.
Never underestimate the power of a vacation.
